Show me the funny
Jun. 2nd, 2009 05:05 pmSo Conan's taken over at the Tonight Show, resolving any angst about what to watch in the late-night hours. He used to be on at the same time as Craig, but since Craig is funnier (I blame Conan's writers -- notice how he was a lot funnier during the writers' strike?), Conan always lost. Now, Conan's on against Letterman, who hasn't been funny in many, many years. You could put Letterman up against a drunk rhino and the rhino would win.
As for the quality of Conan's new show, it was interesting to see how much stayed, how much he just brought with him from the old show. Most of this was good -- good to see Max and the band again, even under a new name (same guys, though, huzzah), and I liked that they kept the old theme music, just jazzed up the arrangement of the intro a tad. I guess it's Conan's theme, not the "Late Night" show's theme.
The only thing I didn't like, really, was Andy. I like Andy himself, but the reason why Andy was around on the old show was 'cause Conan was so new to talk shows that they didn't think he could carry the show without a backup man. Now, Conan's more than capable of doing the show on his own, and Andy seems useless, just this random guy at a podium (and why a podium?) chuckling from time to time and interrupting Conan's flow. Andy's actually a lot like Paul Schaeffer, who's also annoyingly unnecessary (though it's not that Letterman's good on his own, just that Schaeffer's interjections only draw attention to how painfully unfunny Letterman is).
