Day One of NaNoWriMo.

1,775 words down, a little above my quota for the day. I'm trying to pace the action nice and slow, 'cause I know I have a habit of racing through plot points and ending up with something really stilted.

So far, I've introduced a few characters, and two of them went for dim sum. (Can you tell I just started reading a book about Chinese food? I totally want dumplings ... so I write about them, instead.) The plot is rolling, but fairly slowly. I still might have to go back and add a scene or something, but we'll see.

At least NaNo gives me a good distraction, something else to focus on. I need that these days.

I've discovered something -- editing during NaNo can be good.

They tell you not to, but I've noticed that I tend to rush when I'm writing, jumping from plot point to plot point without actually fleshing things out much or describing enough (I know I tend to just assume people can see what's in my head instead of being adequately descriptive). Right now, I'm going back through what I wrote last night, and my word count's going up simply by fixing what I already had so it reads better. (Not to mention that I caught a glaring problem -- I had one character eating four different things in the course of three sentences of dialogue. Pacing ftw?)

So maybe this'll be how I get something more readable this year -- write some, then revise some, then write some more.
