The cult of a cappella?
Mar. 31st, 2008 01:35 amI was at Crossgates today, doing some shopping, when I heard music coming from the area outside the old Cohoes. It turns out that there was an a cappella group performing. Sweet, right? And not only were they pretty decent, but they were there to promote a three-day a cappella fest this weekend at the Egg. Awesome, right?
I went up to one of the guys after and was talking to him about their group and how I miss singing, this and that, and he said that they're looking at starting a feeder group, since they limit their group to six members but would like to have replacements ready in case someone quits and they know there's a lot of people like me who'd like to get in on the action.
So I get all excited... maybe I could join them, and that would rock. And maybe I'll go to the show next weekend, cool.
And then, I decided to look them up just now. And I found that they're run by a cult. I kid you not. I've read about these "NXIVM" people before, and they're very, VERY sketchy.
So a word to all of my local and music-loving friends: Do NOT support these people. Do NOT go to their concert this weekend at the Egg or any other of their events. Find a better group to support, like, say, your local college group (Sagettes, anyone? Or even the Rusty Pipes, Bandersnatchers, Dutch Pipes, etc.?), or an area chorus, or anyone else who isn't part of a dangerous cult.
