Crazy like whoa
Nov. 9th, 2005 01:51 amWow, my first election night. It was crazy, it was adrenalin-rushing, and it was even nerve-nauseating (when it was five to midnight and I still didn't have my lead story, I really thought I was gonna throw up). It was nice, too, 'cause Joe was there beside me, helping out any way he could (and helping me calm down when I was starting to freak out -- and sorry, honey, btw, 'cause I know I totally hushed you at least once, very rude-like, but when I'm super-busy, I sometimes lose my manners a bit).
I can't believe the Dems swept, too, what a huge shock. Maybe Towne's conflict of interest finally caught up with him (though voters didn't seem to care last time), but Lenz and Britt, I thought they were shoe-ins -- Lenz has done a decent job, I think, except for that party-line river bullshit (I've smelled the river on a rainy day, I do not want to drink it, especially when there's a much cleaner, safer, closer, cheaper source available), and Britt, well, he was a Republican heir apparent. Not to mention Klein and Scirocco -- I mean, c'mon, they're GOP good ol' boys, and hell, Keyrouze? Keyrouze, who couldn't win last time, wins now over those deeply-entrenched GOP lackeys? Whoa.
I guess maybe the voters were just fed up with the GOP bullshit lately. I mean, there's the water thing, for one, especially when it comes to Klein and Scirocco, who've clearly been thinking more about their county buddies than about the city they're supposed to represent. But really, I think a lot of it came down to the dirty, lousy campaign the GOP waged, largely through their county committee. We got quite a few letters from Republicans disgusted with their own party over the negative attacks, the word-twisting and even the outright lies (I'm looking at you, Mary Anne Macica -- you can repeat that "21% tax increase" line until you're blue in the face, but that still won't make it any less of a steaming pile of crap, an out-and-out blatant lie). I guess everybody was just sick of it.
I'm happy Kim won, at least, 'cause he really did have the better campaign message -- I mean, after the Curley debacle, we do need to get the politics out of Public Safety, and bully for Britt and his police experience, but we already have a police chief. I'm shocked that Kim won, but I think it's a good thing.
The only sucky thing is that it's a Dem-packed council. I was hoping they'd keep two Republicans, make it a nice balance. After all, McCabe would be the tie-breaker then, and he's the only real voice of reason on there, the only one who isn't a stupid politician full of partisan bullcrap. Before, if McCabe disagreed with the majority, he only had to sway one Republican to join him and McTygue. Now, if he disagrees with the Democratic majority, he's probably screwed.
*Disclaimer: Yeah, I know nobody's reading this and nobody cares. It's not even my city, either, but city politics are way more interesting than the ones in my town, where the same old GOP good ol' boys run everything all the time.*
*Another disclaimer: None of this has any bearing on my employer or what I do at work, blah blah blah.*
